Grand Haven MI

Grand Haven South Pier, Michigan
Harbour Lights #212

In 1905, the sturdy South Pier at Grand Haven, one of Lake Michigan's best deepwater harbors, was extended more than a hundred feet out into the lake. At the same time, officials decided to move two lighthouses onto the pier, marking the entrance to the Grand River and the harbor. Both beacons are still active.

Several of the lighthouses on Lake Michigan feature a metal 'catwalk' that provides access to the lighthouse at the end of a pier when the waves are crashing over the pier itself. The pioneering work Harbour Lights did on previous lighthouses with metal work such as Thomas Point MD (HL181), Sanibel Island FL (HL194), New Point Loma CA (HL604), and Sturgeon Bay WI (HL217), enabled us to produce a catwalk that is a significant improvement over the cast version of St. Joseph North Pier MI (HL183).

When the Artist's Proofs of Grand Haven South Pier arrived at our reps' showrooms around the country, our Michigan Rep phoned with the urgent news that the roof was the wrong color! (He had helped us photograph the light.) The 1st shipment was already loaded on a container ship on its way to El Cajon. Harbour Lights began to make preparations to repaint all 4,000 roof tops in the initial shipment when it arrived.

We utilized our own origination painters and brought in the factory's top painter from the Orient who worked with our Quality Control staff to handle the job. Our 6-8 person crew worked for many days to complete the task in time for our first shipment. We also re-shot the publicity photos showing a now gray-roofed Grand Haven South Pier sculpture.
