Price's Creek North Carolina
Harbour Lights #325
The unique lighthouse, located along the banks of the
Cape Fear River welcomes travelers passing through this pristine country.
Inaccessible to the public, you can still get a glimpse of this important
part of nautical history while traveling by ferry.
Price’s Creek was known to be a pre-Civil War lighthouse, which lends
towards a rather sorted history of battle and bloodshed near the
unassuming beacon. When the Civil War began the range lights along the
Cape Fear River were taken over and used as signal towers by the
Confederate States Signal Corps. Soon after that, all but one was
destroyed.
Built in 1848, this petite lighthouse stood twenty feet tall. It was the
last lighthouse built on the river and is the only beacon along the river
that still stands today. Originally, two beacons were built next to each
other, a twenty-foot circular brick structure and a wooden structure on
top of a keeper’s brick house. The wooden tower was severely damaged
during the late 1800’s and eventually disappeared. The brick beacon is the
remaining part that still stands today.
Because this historic memento is located on private property today, the
best view for visitors is from the top deck of the ferry while traveling
through the Southport Harbor. Harbour Lights has depicted this lighthouse
as the little red brick tower stood in pristine condition.
