Staten Island Range
New York
Harbour Lights #330
The pristine area of the country now known as Staten
Island, New York, was once called Monacnong, which is the Indian word
meaning “enchanted woods”. Staten Island has lived up to this designation,
as it boasts lush landscapes and amazing views. As far back as 1776
explorers and settlers of the island often documented it as simply
“paradise”.
The current Staten Island Range Light was built in 1912. The residences of
the island love their lighthouse and take great pride in maintaining it
and keeping it in top condition. It is located 141 feet above New York’s
Lower Bay. The design of the prized lighthouse is octagonal in shape and
rises 90 feet in the air.
It is a beautiful lighthouse to visit. The beacon has been hailed as an
architectural marvel. It is surrounded by an abundance of plant life and
is a delight to behold for visitors everywhere. If you are ever near
Latourette Park, you won’t want to miss seeing this distinctive piece of
nautical history.
The other part of this Range Light set is the West Bank Lighthouse, which
is the front range of the duo. In 1968 it was deemed as a New York City
Landmark and remains an active aid to navigation today.
