Braddock Point, New York
Harbour Lights #353
This
privately owned and operational Lighthouse of brick construction was
built in 1895, the original site had a 97’ tower, a 2.5 story Victorian
style Keeper’s dwelling and carriage house. The Braddock Point Light was
built to guide mariners traveling to and from Rochester NY - Ontario.
The octagonal tower houses a 3.5 Order Fresnel Lens. The lens, lantern
and metal work were obtained from the Cleveland Light which was
demolished in 1895. Braddock Point was one of the brightest Lights on
Lake Ontario.
After withstanding many years of harsh weather, the United States Coast
Guard deactivated the light and removed about two-thirds of the tower in
1954.
As time went on the elements and vandalism caused the tower and Keeper’s
dwelling to fall into a state of further disrepair.
In February 1986, the Thulin Family purchased the property and began the
painstaking task of replacing structural walls, making moldings and
totally restoring the once gracious home. This labor of love extended
for eight years. Through this time, the Thulins had many conversations
with the United States Coast Guard resulting in the tower being rebuilt
and on February 28, 1998 Braddock Point was relit, once again shining
bright!
