Old Alcatraz CA
Harbour Lights #385
Old Alcatraz Light, built in 1854 off the coast of San Francisco, became the first lighthouse on the West Coast. The structure was a two-story California cottage with the tower in the center. It was outfitted with a fixed Third Order Fresnel lens, which was later replaced with a flashing Fourth Order lens. Often the thick San Francisco fog rendered the light ineffective. A hand-rung fog bell was installed. Old Alcatraz was damaged in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and was eventually torn down. 4" x 4 1/2".
