Gurnet Plymouth, Massachusetts Plymouth, Massachuetts, and the peninsula known as the Gurnet, was the site of America's first "twin lights" established in 1768. Keeper John Thomas died in the 1776, leaving his wife, Hannah, to become the nation's first woman lightkeeper. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1801. New twin towers were built in 1803, 30 feet apart. Forty years later, a pair of 34-feet high, octagonal wooden towers were built connected with a covered walkway to replace the old structures. The northeast tower was torn down in 1924, thus ending a 156-year history of twin lights on the harbor.
