Although Whaleback Light was built to protect Portsmouth Harbor, New Hampshire, it is actually located closer to the Maine coast. The new 50-foot tall tower was constucted of huge granite blocks dovetailed together and bolted to the ledge. In 1878, a fog signal was added. A Fourth Order Fresnel lens shone from the lantern room, which was replaced by revolving aero-beacons after the station was automated in 1963.
