Whaleback, ME
Harbour Lights #484
Although Whaleback Light was built to protect Portsmouth Harbor, New Hampshire, it is actually located closer to the Maine coast. The original 1820 lighthouse was replaced in 1872 because of severe damage from violent storms. The new 50-foot tall tower was constucted of huge granite blocks dovetailed together and bolted to the ledge. In 1878, a fog signal was added. A Fourth Order Fresnel lens shone from the lantern room, which was replaced by revolving aero-beacons after the station was automated in 1963.
